Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life
First of all,
MERRY CHRISTMAS! I hope you had a brilliant time. I have been writing and
editing this post for a while and I should have uploaded it ages ago but…
Better late than never.
The 25th of
November was quite a special day for Americans, not only because of
Thanksgiving, it was special as the cast of a very popular TV-show decided to
get together and filmed four episodes that would close a door and end a cycle. This
TV-show is full of literature references, quotes, old films, coffee, a local
diner´s owner with bad temper and two crazy women whose comings and goings are
able to make an audience burst into laughter or tears. Did you guess which show
am I talking about? Yes, Gilmore Girls.
I know, it
is not a book, so I shouldn´t write a review about it, but I think literature
is really present in this show, as the two main characters love to read and
make references to literature works. Besides, it is my favourite TV-show and I
couldn´t keep my opinion to myself.
I first
watched Gilmore Girls when I was 9 and the whole cast made me feel home. As a
shy girl, who loved to read or watch movies and worked hard to achieve the
highest marks, Rory soon became my role model.
When
Netflix announced that a new season was going to be released, the whole fandom went
wild. Nobody could expect that, but we all hoped it would eventually happen.
What were Lorelai and Rory up to? Is Lorelai still going out with Luke? Is
Rory a great journalist? What
happened to Paris? What happened to Richard, as the actor that portrayed him passed
away? The questions were overwhelming, but there was a certain question that
was bothering me: What if I don´t like it? After all, it is my favourite
TV-show and I grew up watching it and I honestly didn´t know what to expect.
But the day
arrived, and once again Sherman-Palladino made us laugh, cry and left us
totally surprised with the unexpected ending. The four episodes last for about
90 minutes each and are named after the four seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer
and Autumn/Fall.
I honestly
loved it, even if nostalgia would get in the way while I was watching it. The
four episodes have a dark background and the Gilmores have to face lots of
obstacles, such as love and family drama. I actually think Rory is the one who
suffers the most through the episodes, as even if she is in her thirties she
just realizes that her life resulted to be different from what she dreamed of
as a teenager. She doesn´t have a job, never gets over Logan and doesn´t have a place to live in.
I honestly
think the four episodes were insufficient. However, even if I would have wanted
the ending to be less opened, in my opinion some things are better left alone
and who knows, maybe in a few years we would get a few extra episodes. It has been amazing to get the chance to see
some mythic characters again, such as Kirk, Sookie, Mrs. Kim, Michel, Babette,
etc and have the opportunity to go back to a Stars Hollows that looks out of this world, full of
interesting people, their customs and fanciful situations.
If you have
never given an opportunity to Gilmore Girls and you love TV-shows with
funny and original characters, romantic drama and coffee, this show was made
for you. What are you waiting for?
