RECOMENDACIONES DE LIBROS PARA HALLOWEEN/BOOK SUGGESTIONS FOR HALLOWEEN.

Hoy os traigo un haul de libros de Halloween, o lo que es lo mismo, un post sobre libros que yo recomiendo para leer en Halloween. Pensaba subirlo el 31 a la mañana pero al final no he podido. En fin, más vale tarde que nunca. ¡Que lo disfrutéis!

Today´s blog post is a Halloween Book Haul, or a post about the books I suggest to read  for Halloween. I wanted to upload the post the morning of the 31st. but I couldn´t. Sorry. Well, better late than never. Enjoy it!

Drácula de Bram Stoker /Dracula by Bram Stoker

Un clásico de terror, publicado en 1897, que cuenta la historia de uno de los monstruos más populares. El libro comienza con Jonathan Harker, un joven abogado que tiene que ir al castillo del Conde Drácula, en Transilvania, por trabajo. La actitud extraña del conde y sus desapariciones a lo largo del día hacen sospechar a Jonathan de que Drácula no es quien dice ser. Allí, atrapado en el castillo, es ajeno a lo que ocurre en Londres, donde la prometida de Jonathan y sus conocidos empiezan a ser acechados.  

Lo cierto es que este libro lo tiene todo, cuenta una historia de una época ya lejana, tiene terror, romance y misterio. Además, está escrita de forma epistolar, es decir, la trama la rellenan los diarios de los protagonistas y las cartas que se envían entre sí.  Con esta novela, Stoker nos presentó a uno de los monstruos más populares y lo convirtió en un clásico de la literatura.

The classical horror story, published in 1897, tells the story of one of the most popular monsters ever. The book follows Jonathan Harker, a young lawyer that has to travel to Transilvanya to work. He stays at Count Dracula´s castle. Soon, Jonathan discovers that the Count has a really strange attitude and that he disappears for the whole day, so he starts to suspect that the Count is not who he says he is. Meanwhile, in London, Mina, Jonathan´s fiancee, and her acquaintances start to be stalked by a dangerous creature. 

Truth to be told, the book tells a story of a distant period and is full of horror, romance and mystery. Besides, it is written as an epistolary novel, which means that the story is narrated by the main characters in a diary or letter form.  With this novel, Stoker introduces a monster known by everybody in popular culture and managed to tranform it into a literary classic.  

La Mujer de Negro de Susan Hill/ The Woman in Black by Susan Hill

A pesar de lo corto que es este libro ( 192 páginas), es bastante intenso. La novela de Susan Hill recuerda mucho a las historias de fantasmas que se cuentan frente a una hoguera en el campamento para que los niños se asusten. Hill imita a la perfección el estilo de la novela gótica tradicional con este cuento espeluznante acerca del espíritu maligno de una mujer que una vez vista por un adulto, se lleva el alma de un niño o niña con ella.

Even if this book is really short (192 pages), it is really intense. Hill´s novel reminds me of the typical ghost stories we were told by a camp fire when we were kids.  The author imitates  the style of a traditional gothic novel and narrates the tale of the evil spirit of a woman, who whenever is seen by an adult, takes the soul of an innocent child. 

El Crisol de Arthur Miller/ The Crucible by Arthur Miller

La noche de Halloween es también conocida como “la noche de las brujas”, así que no podía faltar un libro acerca de uno de los casos de brujería más importantes de la historia,  el de las brujas de Salem. El Crisol es una obra de teatro escrita por Arthur Miller en 1952, que relata los juicios de brujas acontecidos en Salem. Aunque la obra en sí no es de terror, los sucesos de discriminación racista, sexista y social que ocurrieron en el siglo XVII resultan terroríficos en sí, así como el trato que se les dio a las acusadas de brujería.

Halloween eve is the night when lots of terrifying creatures get out, especially witches, so I could´t leave a story about witches out of this list, As we know, one of the most popular cases of "witchcraft" happened in Salem. "The Crucible" is a play written by Arthur Miller in 1952 and narrates the witch trials that happened in Salem. Even if the play is not particularly terrifying, the events that took place during the period ( racial, social discrimination and sexism), including the way they treated the accused were dreadful and heartless.

Cementerio de Animales de Stephen King

Como no, no podía faltar Stephen King en esta lista. Cementerio de Animales fue el primer libro del autor que leí y me parece una introducción fantástica al género de terror. El ambiente en el que Stephen King sumerge a los lectores es sombrío y espeluznante. La novela comienza con la mudanza de la familia Creed a Maine. Lo que parece una vida idílica se ve de pronto ensombrecida por la fatalidad del destino. Los giros que da esta obra no dejan de sorprender al lector y el final es muy típico de King, sorprendente y a la vez terrorífico. Con Cementerio de Animales, el autor demuestra una vez más que es el maestro del género de terror. 

To be honest, it is a must to mention Stephen King when writing about horror. "Animal Sematary" was the first book  I read from this author and I think it is a fantastic way of introducing a reader to the horror genre. The atmosphere King creates in his novels is dark and hair-raising. The book begins with the Creed family moving to Main. What it looks like an idyllic and calm life, dramatically turns to be full of misfortunes and fatality. The novel contains plenty of turnarounds that keeps the reader hooked up and astonished and the ending is really typical of King, surprising and terrifying.  With "Animal Sematary", the author proves ones again that he is the master of the genre.
